Data and sources

A corner page is assembled from 58 datasets, all but one published by 15 City and State agencies, three federal agencies, New York City's bike-share system and OpenStreetMap contributors; the one exception is a short file of our own. The most recent was retrieved on October 13, 2026.

Neighborhood pages

The neighborhood pages, and the populations on the borough and New York pages, use the datasets above and five more. The introduction each page opens on is our own writing: every claim in it was checked against the sources listed under it, which are linked on the page itself.

Borough, camera-ticket and New York pages

The borough, camera-ticket and New York pages use the datasets above and five more. Their articles are our own writing: every figure from our data is filled in from it when the site is built, the comparisons the articles make are worked out from it then, and every other fact, its figures and dates included, cites the sources listed under the article.

Public safety (neighborhood, borough and city pages)

The Public safety sections use the datasets above and two more, the NYPD's complaint files:

NYPD Complaint Data Current (Year To Date)New York City Police DepartmentNeighborhood pages: the major felonies the NYPD recorded in the year so farOctober 14, 2026

As the City's Open Data law asks of a site that republishes a public data set (Administrative Code § 23-502(d)), these are its sources, their versions and what was changed. The versions: Complaint Data Historic, updated April 28, 2026, and Complaint Data Current (Year To Date), updated July 27, 2026. The changes: of each complaint the download keeps 15 columns; the figures are counted from nine of them, its number, report date, key code, law category, jurisdiction code, precinct, premises type and mapped point (its latitude and longitude), and the other six enter no figure and are never printed; a complaint whose place does not support the figure it would enter is kept out of that figure, by the rules on the Methodology page; a complaint number that appears twice is counted once; and every complaint is counted by the date of its report.

Licenses

  • NYC Open Data terms of use. NYC Open Data's terms place no restriction on use; the data is for information, carries no warranty, and the publishing agency's own copy is the authoritative one. The site credits every source anyway. It covers the datasets of NYC City Planning, NYPD, NYC Records, Landmarks Preservation Commission, NYC Public Design Commission, NYC Parks, NYCHA, NYC Technology and Innovation, NYC Housing Preservation and Development, NYC DOT, NYC Finance and NYC Health.
  • MTA developer terms and conditions. The MTA's developer terms: the data is served from this site's own files, the MTA does not license or endorse the site, and the site makes no statement that the data is accurate, complete or timely. It covers the datasets of MTA.
  • The bike-share system's data-sharing policy. The bike-share system's data-sharing policy lets the station data be used in a product or service, but never offered as a stand-alone dataset: a page names its nearest station and counts the others, and no page or file lists all the stations. Neither the operator's nor its sponsor's name or mark appears on the site, and nothing here implies that the system is connected with, approves of or endorses the site. It covers the datasets of New York City's bike-share system.
  • Open NY terms of use. The State's Open NY terms: free reuse, no attribution required, State seals and marks excluded. It covers the datasets of NYS Environmental Conservation and NYS Agriculture and Markets.
  • United States public domain. Data the federal government publishes is in the public domain in the United States: no copyright and no restriction on reuse. The site names the agency as its source and implies no endorsement, and the agency's own copy is the authoritative one. It covers the datasets of US Department of Energy, FDIC and USDA.
  • Open Database License. OpenStreetMap's data, © OpenStreetMap contributors. Beyond the map's tiles, the site takes from it only the position of a store the State's and USDA's lists already name, where OpenStreetMap records the same chain at the same house number, or its only store of that chain close by. It covers the datasets of OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • CornerFacts editorial file. Our own files: the names in common use for renamed crossings, the introductions on the neighborhood pages, and the articles on the borough, camera-ticket and New York pages. Every entry cites where its facts come from and the date it was checked. It covers the datasets of CornerFacts.

Bus and subway times

Next buses, under a corner's nearest bus stop, shows the MTA's own predictions for that stop from the MTA's real-time bus feed: for each route, its destination, the expected arrivals of its next buses and the nearest one's distance, passed on as the MTA gives them. This site's server fetches them as that part of the page comes near the screen and keeps each stop's answer for 30 seconds, and the page says when the MTA produced them and that they may not be real time. The MTA does not license or endorse CornerFacts, and neither the MTA nor this site states that the times are accurate, complete or timely. The Live arrivals link below the times opens the MTA's own page for the stop.

Next trains, under a corner's nearest subway station, shows the MTA's own predictions for the station's platforms from the MTA's real-time subway feeds: for each line and direction, the station its trains end at and when the next ones are expected, passed on as the MTA gives them, under the MTA's own name for each direction from its station list. This site's server reads the feeds as that part of the page comes near the screen and keeps them and each station's answer for 30 seconds, and the page says when the MTA produced the predictions and that they may not be real time. As with the buses, the MTA does not license or endorse CornerFacts, and neither the MTA nor this site states that the times are accurate, complete or timely.

Child care

Child care centers come from the Health Department's list of active child care programs, group child care and school-based child care, which the Department updates daily; programs whose permits are preliminary, suspended or closed are not on it. A page lists a center under the name the Department gives it and says what its permits are for and the ages they serve, as the list records them. It does not say whether a center has places, is open or is taking children. Pre-K rows come from the Department of Education's pre-K directory, through City Planning's Facilities Database. The Health Department does not endorse CornerFacts or anything made from its list.

Gas stations and charging

Gas stations come from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's register of petroleum bulk storage, which records each registered site's tanks. A page gives a station where a site registered for retail gasoline sales has a gasoline tank in service and City tax records class its lot as a gas station, or where the registration was read by hand against City records. A station is named by its lot's address, never by a brand or by the company that registered it, and a page does not say whether it is open or what it sells.

Public charging for electric cars comes from the Alternative Fuels Data Center's station list, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Laboratory of the Rockies and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which distributes it in the National Transportation Atlas Database. A page gives only public sites the list shows as available, with a plug any car can use, by address and with their chargers by level; never a station's or a network's name, and never whether a charger is free now or what it costs.

The map

Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap, drawn in the OpenMapTiles schema from OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License. The map shows those tiles as a picture beneath the page's own pins; every fact on a page comes from the datasets above.

The Photos button lays the City of New York's aerial photographs over the map: 14 years from 1924 to 2024, from the City's map tile service, through this site's own server, © City of New York, licensed for reuse under CC BY 4.0. The City fitted the 1924 and 1951 photographs to today's map by hand. Like the tiles, the photos are a picture beneath the pins, and no fact on a page is taken from them.

What the site works out itself

Some figures are ours, computed from the datasets above by the rules on the Methodology page: walking distances along the street network, counts within a stated radius, which corner a record belongs to, and the corner registry itself. Our text, page design and those derived figures are © CornerFacts; the underlying data belongs to its publishers.

Corrections

If a figure looks wrong, check the dataset linked above first, because the site republishes what the publisher records. An error in how a record was matched to a corner, or in how a page words it, is ours to fix: write to hello@cornerfacts.com.
