Terms of use

CornerFacts is a free reference to New York's street corners, built from public records. Using it means accepting the terms below. They are short because the site is simple: it republishes public data, it gives no advice, and it asks you to respect the licenses of the publishers whose data it carries.

What the site is

CornerFacts ("the site", "we") collects datasets that City and State agencies, federal agencies, New York City's bike-share system and OpenStreetMap contributors release for public use, joins them at the corner where two streets meet, and publishes the result on one page per corner. Pages are generated from the source data and rebuilt from fresh downloads; the Methodology page sets out every rule and Data and sources lists every dataset with its license and the date it was retrieved.

The site is an independent project. It is not operated by, affiliated with or endorsed by the City of New York, the NYPD, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Finance, the Department of City Planning, NYC Parks, NYCHA, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the MTA, the State of New York or any other publisher whose data it uses, and it is not an official record of any of them.

What the site is not

  • Not advice. Nothing on the site is legal, insurance, engineering, road-safety, real-estate, investment or personal-safety advice. If a decision depends on a figure, confirm it with the publisher or a qualified professional first.
  • Not a finding of fault or cause. Crash figures are counts of police-reported events; they say nothing about who was responsible or why an event happened.
  • Not a safety rating. A corner's safety record is a count over a stated window (2021 to 2025); it is not an assessment of how safe the corner is for you.
  • Not parking permission. Parking rules are quoted from the City's sign records, which can lag the street; the sign on the street governs.
  • Not a real-time record. Every dataset has a retrieval date, listed on Data and sources, and each page gives the days its data was retrieved. Records can lag the events they describe, and entrances, stops, lanes and signs change.

Accuracy and availability

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". We take care with the joins and the wording, but we republish what the publishers record, including their errors, gaps and delays, and our matching of records to corners can itself be wrong. We do not warrant that any figure is accurate, complete or current, and in particular neither the MTA nor this site states that the MTA's data is accurate, complete or timely. We may change, correct or remove any page at any time, and the site may sometimes be unavailable.

If a figure looks wrong, check its source first: the foot of each corner page names the publishers it drew on, and Data and sources lists every dataset. Errors in our matching or wording are ours and are fixed in the next build once reported: write to hello@cornerfacts.com.

The data's licenses, and how you may reuse the figures

Reusing what is on the site, in short
WhatOn what terms
Quoting figures and linking to any pageWelcome, for any lawful purpose, crediting the original publisher and CornerFacts, with a link to the page the figure came from
Reasonable excerpts for news, research, teaching and commentaryWith credit, no permission needed
Whole pages or substantial parts of the site, or its compiled files, for republicationOur written permission

The data belongs to its publishers and is used under the terms they grant: chiefly the NYC Open Data terms of use for City datasets and the MTA's developer terms for subway and bus data. You are welcome to quote figures from the site and to link to any page, for any lawful purpose. When you do, please credit the original publisher, credit CornerFacts with a link to the page the figure came from so readers can check its date and method, and present the site's derived figures as ours rather than as official statistics.

Our own material (the text, page design, code, and the way the datasets are measured and joined) is © CornerFacts. Reproducing whole pages or substantial parts of the site, or copying its compiled files (the search index and the location files) for republication, needs our written permission. Reasonable excerpts for news, research, teaching and commentary, with credit, need none.

Acceptable use

Please use the site in a way that leaves it working for everyone else: crawl it at a gentle rate and respect robots.txt, leave the parts of the site and its hosting that are not public alone, and use the CornerFacts name and logo only in ways that keep clear that the site speaks for itself rather than for any agency.

Pages include map tiles from OpenFreeMap, drawn from data © OpenStreetMap contributors, whose data also gives the position of many of the stores a page names, under the Open Database License; aerial photos © City of New York, shown when you ask for them; and links to open-data portals, agencies and cornerfacts.ca, our Toronto edition. We do not control those sites or services and are not responsible for their content or availability; their own terms and privacy policies apply once you follow a link.

Trademarks

CornerFacts and its logo are ours. The names of the City of New York, its agencies and programs, the MTA and every other publisher mentioned belong to their owners and are used only to identify the source of the data.

Limitation of liability

The site is free and offered for general information. To the fullest extent permitted by law, CornerFacts and the people who run it are not liable for any loss or damage, direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or otherwise, arising from your use of the site or reliance on anything in it, including losses caused by errors, omissions or delays in the underlying data, by the site being unavailable, or by content on linked sites. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

Governing law

These terms and your use of the site are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. A dispute that cannot be resolved between us will be heard by the courts of Ontario.

Changes

We may update these terms as the site grows, for example when a city or a data source with its own license conditions is added. The date at the top shows the current version; continued use after a change means you accept it. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
