The City acquired more than 56 acres for the park in 1913 on high ground where well-off families had built country homes in the 19th century, and NYC Parks runs it today. Its pool, one of 11 huge outdoor pools that opened in the summer of 1936, hosted U.S. Olympic swimming and diving trials in 1936 and 1964 and became a city landmark in 2006.
