The point is named for William Hallett, who received a land grant here in 1652, and development began in 1835, when fur trader Stephen Halsey bought land around the ferry landing; in 1839 he had the village incorporated and named it Astoria for his friend John Jacob Astor. Prosperous New Yorkers raised large houses on 27th Avenue and on 12th and 14th Streets, and in 1876 Army engineers blew up the reef off the point to make the Hell Gate channel safer for shipping.
