The site was a summer resort called Bowery Bay Beach in the 1880s and a private seaplane base from 1929; the city's municipal airport opened here on December 2, 1939, and is named for Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who had long promoted aviation. The Port Authority has operated it since 1947, and a complete rebuilding finished new Terminals B and C in the 2020s, while the Marine Air Terminal, its original terminal for overseas flights, is a designated landmark.
