The park is named for the ferries between the Bronx and Queens; its land, part of the Throgmorton grant of 1642, was bought by the City for the bridge project and became parkland in 1937, and the bridge's opening in 1939 ended the ferry between Clason Point and College Point. Today the park holds a golf course, a community park and a waterfront park. Beside it, St. Raymond's Cemetery, owned by the Archdiocese of New York, is the resting place of soldier and chaplain Francis P. Duffy.
