The family included Lewis Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Gouverneur Morris, known as the penman of the Constitution, and the town of Morrisania became part of New York City in 1874. Rows of Free Classical houses begun in 1900 line the streets around Morris High School, completed in 1904 as the first major public high school in the Bronx, and together they form the Morris High School Historic District, designated in 1982.
