Its name comes from a village that grew up around a New York and Harlem Railroad station opened in 1841; in the 1850s postmaster Hiram Tarbox named the village Tremont for three local hills: Fairmount, Mount Eden and Mount Hope. German farmers who left Europe after the revolutions of 1848 were among the early newcomers, followed by Irish, Italian and Jewish families. The red-brick Tremont branch library on Washington Avenue, a Carnegie library designed by Carrère and Hastings, has served the area since 1905.
