Sunset Park's rowhouses went up in the late 1800s and early 1900s for port workers and commuters, and in the 1980s a growing number of Chinese residents settled around Eighth Avenue, their numbers in the neighborhood tripling by the end of the decade. Borough Park, to the east, grew after World War I, spurred by the New Utrecht Avenue elevated line, today's D train, and it is now home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities outside Israel.
