It grew from Blythebourne, a cottage colony that Electus Litchfield founded in 1887 and named with Scottish words for a happy home, and from the neighboring tract William H. Reynolds divided into 400 lots in 1902 and called Borough Park. The New Utrecht Avenue elevated line, now the D train, spurred growth after World War I, and by the mid-1920s Borough Park had taken in Blythebourne. Today it is home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities outside Israel, served by shops and restaurants along 13th Avenue.
