Flatbush remained mostly farmland well into the 1800s, but after the Brooklyn, Flatbush & Coney Island Railroad opened in 1878, its fields gave way to streets of single-family houses. Dean Alvord started Prospect Park South on about 60 acres in 1899, and on the former Ditmas family farm most houses went up between 1902 and 1906. Five city historic districts lie wholly or partly within the area.
