George Douglas bought 240 acres here in 1835, along with the Van Zandt mansion, and railroad stations opened in both communities in 1866. In the early 20th century, 175 acres of the Douglas family's holdings became Douglas Manor, a planned community designated the Douglaston Historic District in 1997. Little Neck lent its name to the littleneck clam, after small hard clams from the bay appeared on the menus of New York's top restaurants from the 1860s through the 1890s.
