A glacier shaped its sandy ridges and kettle ponds, and the park takes its name from the Alley, an 18th-century center of trade and manufacturing in a valley there. The city acquired 330 acres for the park in 1929 and opened it in 1935. Run by NYC Parks, it is known for its woods and wetlands, the Alley Pond Environmental Center and the Queens Giant, the tallest measured tree in New York City.
