Oakland Gardens, which many people call southern Bayside, runs south to Union Turnpike; its name is traced either to The Oaks, a Lawrence family mansion of the 1840s, or to nearby Oakland Lake, the largest of the area's glacial kettle ponds. Hollis Hills, just north of the Grand Central Parkway, is mostly made up of detached Colonial, Tudor and ranch-style houses set on roomy, tree-lined lots.
