The City pieced its land together between 1928 and 1944 as Hillside Park and renamed it in the mid-1930s for W. Arthur Cunningham, a World War I veteran elected city comptroller in 1933. A stretch of the Long Island Motor Parkway, the private toll road William K. Vanderbilt Jr. built in 1908, now carries walkers, joggers and cyclists; the park's plan provided tennis courts, playing fields and bridle paths, and it also has mountain-bike trails.
