Wealthy New Yorkers built country estates on these heights from the late 1820s, and the area joined New York City in 1874. Fieldston, developed by the owners of the Delafield estate from 1909 with winding roads that follow the terrain, became a historic district in 2006, while Wave Hill, whose historic estate homes stand on a high ridge over the river, has been a public garden since 1965. Spuyten Duyvil's Dutch name, rendered as spouting devil among other readings, refers to the strong tidal currents there.
