When the City acquired its first 93 acres in 1937, the site was tidal marsh, and the park was built up on fill over that marsh, with more land added through 1967. Its name comes from old maps that treated the East River as part of Long Island Sound. Run by NYC Parks, it offers playgrounds, running tracks, sports fields, a bicycle path and launch sites for kayaks and canoes.
