The land held farms and estates through the 1800s, and homes went up after the IRT Pelham Line, today's 6 train, was extended along Westchester Avenue in 1920, with stations at Elder, Morrison and St. Lawrence avenues. Eastern Boulevard was renamed Bruckner Boulevard in 1942 for former Bronx Borough President Henry Bruckner, and the Soundview name, chosen in 1967, recalls old maps that counted the East River as part of Long Island Sound.
