Named for the English spa town of Bath, it was developed as a seaside getaway for well-off families, and a steam railroad link to Brooklyn's horsecar lines at the end of 1863 helped it grow. In the mid-20th century the Shore Parkway was built over the beach, and a promenade was added so residents could reach the seawall. Its parks include Bensonhurst Park, on the bay at Cropsey Avenue, which the city bought in 1895.
