Streets for the village of Manhattanville were laid out around 1806 in a valley known as the Hollow Way during the Revolution, and in the 1850s it became the first stop on the Hudson River Railroad's northern route. The village also had a ferry to New Jersey and small industries, among them a color works, a worsted mill and a brewery. City College moved to its Neo-Gothic campus in 1907, and Columbia University dedicated its 17-acre Manhattanville campus in 2016.
