A hamlet grew up near the railroad's 86th Street station, the area was known as Yorkville before 1867, and elevated lines opened on Third and Second Avenues in 1878 and 1879. For much of the 19th century and into the 20th it was mostly German, and over time families of Czech, Slovak, Irish, Polish and Hungarian descent moved in. Gracie Mansion, one of Manhattan's oldest wooden structures, is the official residence of the city's mayors, and the Henderson Place Historic District sits on East End Avenue between 86th and 87th Streets.
