Manhattan Valley occupies a natural dip in the land, called Clendening Valley after a local farm until the 1880s, and the Croton Aqueduct crossed it on an elevated structure built from 1838 to 1842. Homes followed the Ninth Avenue elevated railroad and, in 1904, the IRT subway. On Central Park West at 106th Street, Charles Coolidge Haight's chateau-style New York Cancer Hospital of the 1880s was the first hospital in the United States devoted only to cancer patients.
