The neighborhood is named for St. Paul's College, an Episcopal seminary that opened here in the 1830s, and after 1854 Conrad Poppenhusen's hard-rubber works made it a factory town for German immigrant workers. The Poppenhusen Institute, which he established in 1868 and which held the country's first free kindergarten, is a city landmark, and Malba, developed from 1908, takes its name from the first letters of its five founders' surnames.
