Dutch farmers founded Whitestone in 1645 and named it for a large white boulder on the shore, and in the silent-film era Beechhurst's waterfront estates made it a favorite retreat for the wealthy. The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge opened here in April 1939, in time for the World's Fair, and Francis Lewis Park, which the bridge crosses at its Queens end, honors the Declaration of Independence signer who retired to Whitestone in 1765.
