Pomonok's name comes from a Native American word for land on Long Island, and from 1921 to 1949 the area held the Pomonok Country Club, host of the 1939 PGA Championship. After the club was sold in 1949, its grounds became the Pomonok Houses, opened by the City Housing Authority in 1951, and Electchester, about 2,500 apartments built by the electrical workers' union Local 3. Hillcrest, named for its hills, is home to St. John's University, whose campus rose on a former golf club after a 1954 groundbreaking.
