The hilltop, then known as Fordham Heights and later renamed University Heights, became home to New York University's uptown campus in 1894; Stanford White's domed Gould Memorial Library there, with the Hall of Fame behind it, has belonged to Bronx Community College since 1973. Along the river lies the 25-acre Roberto Clemente State Park, opened that same year, and close by stands 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, where a recreation-room party in August 1973 is celebrated as the birthplace of hip hop.
