Its eastern section is an industrial district along Newtown Creek, a hub of large-scale industry since the early 1800s. Italian immigrants arrived in the second half of the 19th century, and the southern stretch of Graham Avenue, known as the Avenue of Puerto Rico, has anchored a Latin American community since the 1950s. It is home to the landmark Williamsburg Houses, completed in 1938 as one of the country's earliest modernist public housing developments, and Cooper Park, opened in the 1890s on the site of a glue works.
