Its land once straddled the colonial towns of Newtown and Bushwick, and the neighborhood is named for the nearby Ridgewood Reservoir, built in the late 1850s. German immigrants drove much of its growth, and most houses in its historic core went up between 1906 and World War I, many designed by one local architectural firm and built of Staten Island brick; about 990 buildings form the Central Ridgewood Historic District, designated in 2014.
