Its name comes from the Mespeatches, one of the main Native American peoples of Long Island. In 1642 English settlers founded the Mespat settlement under a charter granted to the Rev. Francis Doughty, an Anglican minister whose land grant from Governor Willem Kieft covered more than 13,000 acres, and it became the first English settlement in Queens. Most residents today trace their roots to Poland, Italy or Ireland.
