Its name, dating from the early 1800s, reflects its position halfway between Williamsburg and Jamaica on the Williamsburgh and Jamaica Turnpike, today's Metropolitan Avenue, which opened in 1816, and after the Civil War its population became mostly German. Works Progress Administration crews built Juniper Valley Park in 1941 and 1942 on former swampland once thick with juniper and white cedar.
