Marine Park-Plumb Island

Park · Brooklyn

Marine Park-Plumb Island is parkland, not a residential neighborhood, holding Marine Park, Brooklyn's largest public park, spread around the westernmost inlet of Jamaica Bay, and Plumb Beach beside the Belt Parkway on Rockaway Inlet.

  • 1.56 square miles
  • 3 street corners
  • 10 bus routes

The park began with 150 acres that Frederic B. Pratt and Alfred T. White donated in 1917, took the name Brooklyn Marine Park in 1937, and added a golf course in 1963 and a nature center in 2000. Plumb Beach, once part of a small island named for its beach plums, joined the mainland when Hog Creek was filled in the late 1930s, and horseshoe crabs come ashore each May and June.
