Mill Basin was once an island with a tide mill dating from between 1660 and 1675; houses followed from the late 1940s. Bergen Beach, named for early settler Hans Hansen Bergen, had an amusement park from 1896 to 1919, though much of it was built up only in the 1990s. On East 36th Street, the Hendrick I. Lott House, with an east wing of 1720 and a main section of 1800, is one of Brooklyn's few remaining Dutch Colonial houses.
