Its name adapts a Lenape word for a fenced area, and after a railroad from East New York to Canarsie Landing opened in 1865, it began turning into a summer beach resort. Large-scale home building came only after World War II, and most new residents in the 1990s came from the Caribbean and the West Indies. The L train ends at Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway near the neighborhood's northern end, and the Canarsie Library on Rockaway Parkway grew from a 1909 deposit station.
