Chinese immigrants began settling Mott, Pell and Doyers Streets in the 1870s, and the community grew sharply after a 1965 U.S. immigration law admitted many more newcomers from Asia. Columbus Park was built in 1897, and the Kimlau Memorial arch in Chatham Square, designed by Poy Gum Lee and erected in 1962, honors Chinese Americans who died in World War II. On Eldridge Street, a synagogue opened in 1887 by Eastern European Jewish immigrants is now a National Historic Landmark and museum.
