Turtle Bay is named for a former East River cove between 45th and 48th Streets, and the area began as a farm granted by the Dutch colonial governor in 1639; the cove had been filled in by 1868. Grand Central Terminal, completed in 1913 in the French Beaux-Arts style, became a city landmark in 1967. Between 1918 and 1920, twenty row houses on East 48th and 49th Streets became the Turtle Bay Gardens enclave, now a historic district.
