Woods, ponds and farms covered the land when the colonies declared independence, and in the early 1900s developer Dean Alvord laid out a suburb modeled on an English village around a Long Island Rail Road station built in 1907 and named for the laurels that grew there. The neighborhood is known for its attached and detached Tudor-style houses and for streets divided by planted, tree-shaded center malls.
