Long a district of farms and forest, it gained a Long Island Rail Road station in 1898, and around the turn of the 20th century a committee of local landowners named it for St Albans in Hertfordshire, England. Its Addisleigh Park section, a city historic district since 2011, holds about 422 buildings, largely houses in Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts styles, and from the 1940s it became home to many celebrated African American entertainers and athletes.
