The landfill opened in 1948 and closed in 2001. City Planning's 2006 draft master plan proposed sports, natural areas and neighborhood recreation for the park's South Park area, with the hilly South Mound seen as a good fit for mountain biking. The Owl Hollow Soccer Fields in Arden Heights opened in 2013, and NYC Parks, working with the nonprofit Freshkills Park Alliance, aims to open the whole park by 2036.
