Windsor Terrace began in 1849, when a developer bought the Vanderbilt farm for a suburban enclave and named it for Windsor, the English town known for its castle; it had about 150 houses by 1890 and drew many Irish immigrants after the Civil War. The South Slope grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s as housing for workers on the Sunset Park waterfront, along the Gowanus Canal and at Green-Wood, and its streets are still defined by two- to four-story rowhouses.
