A developer bought the land in 1906 and named it for nearby Forest Park, and the Russell Sage Foundation, founded in 1907, built Forest Hills Gardens as a model suburban community whose houses, by architect Grosvenor Atterbury, were mostly finished between 1910 and 1917. Its 1923 tennis stadium hosted the national championships that became the U.S. Open, and after the subway arrived in 1936 the population reached 32,500 by 1940.
