Its name comes from the Dutch kill, meaning creek or channel; a French settler called the area La Grand Kills in 1664, and it has been known as Great Kills since 1865. Eltingville is named for the Elting family, who settled there in the early 1800s, and its station was the Staten Island Railway's terminus until the line reached Tottenville in 1860. Mostly rural into the 1950s, the area filled with new homes after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964.
